Trees and Shrubs
  • Continue to plant container-grown trees, shrubs and roses and keep them watered until established.
  • Tie in climbers and wall shrubs with twist-ties or string.
  • Anticipate diseases on roses now and buy a good spray.
Flowers
  • Plant Dahlia Tubers this month to give a succession of exotic blooms.
  • Continue to plant new season’s herbaceous perennials.
  • Protect vulnerable plants especially Hostas and Delphiniums, from slugs using slug pellets.
  • Continue to sow hardy annuals.
Fruit
  • Prune Plums and Cherries, painting wounds with a fungicidal sealant.
  • Check Gooseberries and Currants for Gooseberry Sawfly Larvae. Spray with a contact insecticide if necessary.
  • Net any soft fruit to protect from bird damage.
Vegetables
  • Sow Runner and French Beans from mid May onwards.
  • Plant out Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Leeks, Lettuce and Celery.
Lawns
  • Treat established lawns with a weed and feed or spot treat individual weeds.
  • Sow new lawns and patch up bare areas with a mix of peat, growmore and grass seed.
Greenhouse
  • Transfer summer bedding plants to a cold frame to harden off prior to planting out in early June.
  • Plant out Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Aubergines, Melons and Peppers in the unheated greenhouse in the middle of the month.
  • Make up hanging baskets to put outside in early June.
  • Provide shade now with blinds, netting or liquid shading.

Houseplants

  • Step up watering and feeding.
  • Spray foliage plants with a fine mist to increase humidity
  • Move pot bound plants on into larger pots.
Don’t Forget
  • Chemicals, if used sensibly, will control weeds, pests and diseases.
  • A 5cm deep mulch of bark will suppress weeds and retain moisture.
