July - What to do in your Garden. [ back to projects ]
Trees and Shrubs
  • Trees, shrubs and roses can all be planted this month provided that they are kept well watered until established.
  • When the first flush of roses has finished, prune back lightly and feed with a rose fertiliser.
  • Be sure to water plants in tubs, raised beds and on walls and fences thoroughly.
Flowers
  • Sow biennials, such as Wallflowers and Sweet Williams on any spare ground.
  • Achieve a romantic cottage garden effect by planting herbaceous perennials.
  • Plant Nerine and Colchicum bulbs for late colour.
Fruit
  • Plant tree and bush fruit and water well until established.
  • When raspberries have finished flowering spray them to control raspberry maggot.
Vegetables
  • Harvest Shallots and hang them in the sun to dry.
  • Plant out winter Brassicas.
  • Sow spring cabbage later this month.
Lawns
  • Mow regularly but don’t ‘scalp’ the grass during dry periods.
  • Treat weeds with a lawn weedkiller such as Verdone before they get a firm foothold.
  • Give the grass a thorough soaking with a sprinkler during dry weather.
Greenhouse
  • Continue to water and feed tomatoes and cucumbers.
  • Control pests with suitable smokes or sprays.
  • Damp down the path and staging to create humidity and ventilate freely on hot days.

Houseplants

  • Feed plants regularly with liquid feed.
  • Put winter Azaleas and Solanums outside.
  • Move fast growing plants into larger pots.
