August - What to do in your Garden. [ back to projects ]
Trees and Shrubs
  • Plant container grown trees, shrubs & roses. Remember to water them well until they are well established.
  • Prune rambler roses by cutting out all shoots that have flowered to ground level.
  • August is the ideal time to cut conifers hedges & slow-growing deciduous hedge (beech)
Flowers
  • Water and feed hanging baskets regularly
  • Fill any gaps or spare ground in borders with herbaceous plants and keep well watered until established
  • Take cuttings of geraniums and fuchsias to over winter for next year
Fruit
  • Summer prune trained apples, pears and bush or fan trained cherries.
  • Plant tree and bush fruit only if you can keep them well watered.
Vegetables
  • Keep a sharp eye out for caterpillars on Brassicas. Hand pick or spray out to control them.
  • Harvest and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Lawns
  • Mow regularly but don’t cut the grass too short in dry weather.
  • Use a liquid feed to green up the lawn.
  • Maintain crisp lawn edges with a good sharp pair of edging shears.
Greenhouse
  • Check plants for water mornings and evenings and ventilate freely.
  • Damp down the path and benches to raise the levels of humidity
  • Feed plants every 7 - 10 days with a liquid feed.

Houseplants

  • Water and feed all houseplants regularly
  • Increase humidity by spraying foliage plants and standing on trays of moist clay granules.
  • Finish any potting on of plants to larger pots.
Don't Forget
  • Keep ponds topped up & feed fish well to build them up for winter.
  • Make sure that you can cope with watering by buying a good hose, reel and sprinkler.
