Trees and Shrubs

April is the best month to plant conifers and other evergreens. Continue to plant pot grown trees, shrubs and roses. Shrubs that produce flowers on this year’s wood can be pruned now. Apply a rose fertiliser now. All flowering shrubs will also benefit from this high potash feed

If the soil is warm and dry on the surface but moist below continue to sow hardy annuals. Plant summer bulbs; corms and tubers. Plant new season’s herbaceous perennials.

Now is a good time to plant Strawberries. Continue to plant tree and bush fruit. Spray fruit to guard against pests and diseases.

Sow seed of Beetroot, Summer and Autumn Cabbage, Autumn Cauliflower, Lettuce, Onions, Parsnip, Pea, Spinach and Turnip. Plant out Second Early and Maincrop Potatoes, garden plant, Lettuce, Cauliflowers, Cabbage, Broccoli, Brussels, Sprouts and Onion Sets.

Sow grass seed to make new lawns or to patch up bare areas. Apply a weed and feed to enhance the lawn. Cut the grass when the weather is mild.

Complete sowing of summer bedding plants. French and African Marigolds and Zinnias are quick from seed to flower. Prick out seedlings into trays of good potting compost. Sow seeds of Melons, Cucumbers, garden plant, Aubergines and Peppers or buy in young plants later this month. Sow seeds of Celery, Outdoor Tomato, Courgette, Runner and French Beans to plant out next month.

Step up watering and feeding now but do not swamp your plants. Watch out for greenfly and red spider mites and treat with an insecticide. Move pot bound plants into larger pots.

Don’t Forget

Look out for pests and diseases and control them early. Water newly planted evergreens and mulch with peat or bark.
